Michele Nguyen wins Erie Intermediate Spelling Bee
ASHTABULA , OHIO: — Michele Nguyen, a sixth grader at Erie Intermediate School, won the school’s spelling bee on Friday.
She edged out fifth-grade student Jose Alferez, who finished second.
Erie Intermediate Principal Patricia Craft awarded Michele a large trophy and certificate. Jose also received a trophy for his efforts.
Second runner-up was sixth grader Isaiah Cheich.
All three will move on to the district’s spelling bee, and then that student will move on to the Ashtabula County Spelling Bee, traditionally held in late January or February.

Some of the words that slipped up the students included benefitted whizzed, sobbed, floral and arrow.
All nine competitors received a certificate for their hard work. They are Alferez, Salma Saied, Peter Sherman, Logan Surbella, Cheich, Braylon McConnell, Logan Magic and Jessie Sanchez Lozano. Christian Gonzalez was absent.
Erie Intermediate Assistant Principal Laura Lorelli served as pronouncer.
Craft recognized all of the participants, noting they are already winners in their classroom’s spelling bee.
Several parents and grandparents attended the bee and applauded the winners.
