JUSTICE FOR EMMALYN NGUYỄN
DENVER (THE U.S. SUN): AFTER two years of prolonged investigation, there is finally some justice for Emmalyn Nguyen.
The then 18-year-old Nguyen suffered a vegetative state for 14 months before her passing in October 2020.
Who was Emmalyn Nguyen?
On August 1, 2019, Emmalyn Nguyen, who was 18 years old at the time, visited Colorado Aesthetic and Plastic Surgery to undergo breast augmentation.
During anesthesia, however, Nguyen went into cardiac arrest. Cardiac arrest refers to the heart suddenly ceasing to beat, causing a lack of blood flow. The detrimental condition can cause death within just minutes.
What happened to Emmalyn Nguyen?
Nguyen died on October 4, 2020, after 14 months of being in a vegetative state.
During the procedure, Dr. Geoffrey Kim and nurse anesthetist Rex Meeker allegedly left Nguyen alone for 15 minutes after her anesthesia, despite the law mandating qualified staff member care after putting someone under anesthesia.

During the 15-minute interval, Nguyen’s lips and face turned blue, putting her under cardiac arrest. Nguyen’s critical condition was found by another nurse, and Kim and Meeker allegedly waited five hours to call 911.
They also allegedly failed to notify the parents immediately when the accident occurred and tried to reassure Nguyen’s mother.
Nguyen suffered severe brain damage and was in a vegetative state until her passing in October 2020. She required constant care after the horrific happening and endured living with a feeding tube.
“Emmalyn’s parents and siblings are heartbroken,” shared attorney David Woodruff of Denver Trial Lawyers. “This turn of events was sadly unexpected.”
What happened to Dr. Geoffrey Kim?
On February 16, 2022, the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office announced that an arrest warrant for Dr. Geoffrey Kim was obtained.
After a prolonged investigation, he’s been charged with first-degree aggravated assault and reckless manslaughter.
Rex Meeker, the nurse anesthetist, was also charged with reckless manslaughter.
“We are glad we are finally getting justice for Emmalyn. Even though it will never bring our daughter back, at least this will help others from getting hurt and prevent ruining other families’ lives. We still haven’t been able to get closure from Emmalyn’s death. Hopefully bringing criminal charges will bring out the truth about what happened and will bring justice for Emmalyn,” shares Nguyen’s family with their attorney Woodruff.
