CD Hà Thanh Xuân: Mưa Trên Biển Vắng

Since her singing career overseas took off in 2011, Hà Thanh Xuân has released several albums, including “Phận Tơ Tằm”, “Một Thời Áo Trắng”, “Thánh Ca Dâng Mẹ” and “Đời Con Gái”. Her latest album, “Mưa Trên Biển Vắng”, distributed through Trung Tâm Thúy Nga, sees Hà Thanh Xuân exploring new styles of music, venturing outside of her comfort zone and what her fans have been long accustomed to.

The title song, “Mưa Trên Biển Vắng”, among many other songs on the album including “Ngàn Năm Vẫn Đợi” and “Xin Thời Gian Ngừng Trôi” are songs that are heavily associated with pop singers such as the late Ngọc Lan. While Hà Thanh Xuân is most known for singing “nhạc quê hương” or Vietnamese country music, her voice is also able to translate well into other genres such as pop. The light and sweet quality to her voice, and her often simplistic approach to singing does suit many pop songs.

Other songs, however, such as “Em Đi Rồi” or “Biển Nhớ” see the singer explore more classic love songs often associated with powerhouse voices or “thính phòng” style singers, and as a result her more delicate interpretation may be less successful. A common pattern that should be noted in several of her albums, including this album, is that her voice is processed and auto-tuned excessively, often to the point where her voice begins to sound unnatural. As a result, her voice can lose some of its emotional quality.
