Houston (Chron) : Seven Lakes senior Lauren Nguyen shot the low round of the tournament to rally for the championship at the Texas Junior Amateur, July 27-29, at Horseshoe Bay Resort.
Nguyen followed rounds of 74 and 73 with a 6-under-par 66 to close the tournament, sinking a birdie on the par-4 final hole to clinch a one-stroke victory. She finished 3-under for the tournament at 213, with Midlothian’s Tiffany Cao (214), McKinney’s Avery Zweig (215) and Austin’s Mimi Burton (216) creating a close race for the lead.
Nguyen entered the final round two strokes behind but closed quickly, overcoming an early bogey with birdies on No. 4, No. 7 and No. 9 to close the front.

She birdied No. 10, No. 13, No. 14 and No. 18 on the back nine of the Apple Rock Course, finishing the tournament with six bogeys and nine birdies.
Nguyen became only the second player to win Texas Junior Amateur titles in both divisions, including her 2017 championship in the Girls 14 & Under division.
She has played at the UIL state tournament twice with the Spartans, finishing 19th as a freshman and 21st as a sophomore. Seven Lakes finished fourth in 2019 with a two-round score of 604. The 2020 season was canceled due to COVID-19.
